Glittering shafts of sunlight
Flashed like sparkling diamonds
Amidst tall strands of seaweed
Colourful fish swam lazily amongst trailing plants
Zipping nervously away from strange shadows
Safely avoiding the gaping maws
Of the giant grouper
She sat quite still and watched the scene
Seemingly floating before her eyes
The peaceful way everything moved
From colourful fish to dainty seahorse
Brilliant coral and mesmerizing anemone
She was entranced by all around her
From the corner of her eye she saw a larger shape
As it drew closer she saw a beautiful face
Surrounded by hair the colour of sun drenched coral
With skin the colour of milk
Surprised but not alarmed
She watched the figure approach
To her bewilderment she saw
Stretching behind this beautiful woman
A long muscular tail
Just like those of the fishes she had admired
Curiousity kept her still
As this vision swam up to her
With eyes the colour of emeralds
And lips the colour of rubies
She heard a voice inside her mind
Softly speaking to her
“Oh why aren’t you with us Selene?
The sailors will be coming out quite soon
You know how much fun it is
To sing to them, and see their faces
As they almost run to move their cumbersome boats?
In total surprise I looked around me
And in amazement I clearly saw
A long and muscular tail
Floating behind me as I lay on the rocks
Slowly lifting and falling to my unconscious design
I agreed to follow this vision
It seemed the thing to do
No words were spoken
At least no human words
She heard each and every thought I had
And all day long I swam and frolicked
With this group of colourful mermaids
Such fun I had as I could never remember before
Yet, quite suddenly I felt an enormous tugging
And I felt towed backwards by an unseen force
I saw my underwater wonderland flash past
I wondered if this thought was to be my last
When I found myself on the edge of the rock pool
Where I had lain down to peer into its depths
My face had fallen into the cool blue water
Bringing me back to myself once more
Had I dreamed this wonderful interlude
Of mermaids frolicking in emerald depths
Or was I indeed one of their kind
Just visiting the land for a time
I suppose I might find out
The next time I come visit my rock pool.
