“Desiderata” by Max Ehrlman has long been one of my favourite pieces of poetry, inspirational writing and communication from the Universe not just to my heart but to my soul.

It is such a profound piece that I find I can meditate on portions of it and come away with more each time. It is also really good for calming the beating heart when you need a little more quiet and placid moments.

It has become so well-known I am often surprised that it hasn’t become even more popular amongst the Spiritual community. Perhaps it is and it is simply not spoken about. Be that as it may, it would not hurt anyone to be widely published. There isn’t a single line which doesn’t contain a message for everyone, for anyone. The message will be completely different and unique for that person. This in itself is nothing short of a miracle. Think about it. One poem written in the early 1900’s and it can bring forth a message for me, for you, for anyone and everyone. Incredibly profound.

“Desiderata” was written in 1927 by an American lawyer and author, Max Ehrlmann of Terre Haute, Indiana. The fact that it has so many messages in each word, in each phrase, each line, makes anything I could add almost superfluous. It’s been on my mind and therefore in my meditations for days. I could continue losing myself in it for many days to come but I have to return to the everyday sooner of later. At present it is sooner.

I need to feed my new love, my puppy Bella. She is growing slowly, and will always remain a small dog, but “Routines are routines Mum”, and she likes our two course breakfast warm and early! So we’ve had a play outside, breakfast, just her, and seen the sun come up. I’m hoping her metabolism will cooperate with ours and sleep for the human’s in the household will be more regular.

I couldn’t leave without taking the opportunity to start back in the swing of writing and this seemed to be the thing to do. It’s what I’ve been drawn to do, and who am I to refuse such a prompting?

I hope you enjoy Desiderata as much as I. Try picking a sentence, a phrase, a paragraph and allow your mind to wander along its beauty and symmetry. It truly is magnificent.

DESIDERATA…that to be desired. Thanks for paying attention to our meditation from the other day. I/we are not good at being dog lovers. But bring on the cats. 🙂 Please follow my simple monthly stories. Where you lead, I/we shall follow. For we have found some of that desiderata.

  Oh I agree wholeheartedly. Loving our little or big furry friends can bring some of the most loving and treasured experiences of our lives. What is even more wondrous is that I truly believe they know, understand and choose us…as much as the other way around.

That is one of the most loving pieces of advice my mother gave me – this poem.

Good to see you back Susan and what a nice start to the post. I always remember Telly Savalas reading this out, he released it as a record years ago. Love the pup. 🙂

Always a favorite poem of mine. Thank you for posting it. I had the pleasure of meeting (the former) Cat Stevens in oerson as a teenager for a few brief moments with some friends prior to his concert. One of them heard how spiritual he was and has bought him a scrolled copy of this poem. It wasn’t fancy or framed, just rolled up in plastic. He received it so graciously, telling her he had been looking everywhere for a copy! That’s love. Bella is so precious..
