#TheOnlyChoice

It was close to dawn

The air frosty with a bite that went to the bone

She had on only a thin cotton dress

The only other had been left at home

Home, what was that but a place to sleep

Somewhere to eat and feel less than wanted

A house that was nothing more than a roof over her head

One she no longer wanted nor cared for.

She knew he would be looking for her soon

The man who was her fleshly husband

Searching quietly through each room

Anger would flare when he found her missing

This, her only chance to flee

Giving her a real choice to be

That which she really was

A noise behind her alerted her to dawn

The search for her had commenced

She could stay no longer

The dress, irrelevant in but a few more moments

The sun began its lukewarm climb over the horizon

Pale crimson and gold fingers pointed over the land

She stood tall and raised her hands to the sky

Towards the power of the winter sun

Taking a deep breath

She drew the energy of the sun into her heart

Shaking loose long auburn hair

Ready to take her part

In the distance she heard a forlorn howl

Her form writhed sinuously

Energy coalesced around her

Blurring the outlines of her human form

Once dissipated there stood a sleek wolf

Her hair a deep auburn colour

Lifting her head she howled joyously

The sound being joined by the other, closing swiftly

As they met, jumping with abandon around each other

They nuzzled each other happily

Shouts behind them from the house

Disturbed their welcome of each other

Bright sherry coloured eyes gazed knowingly

Together they loped off quickly through the forest

Her prison shattered for the last time.

#NighttimeRambles

Enter the land of possibility….. sleep

“Even a soul submerged in sleep is hard at work and helps make something of the world.”
― Heraclitus, Fragments.

Night-time, the time of dreams and restful sleep. Except it doesn’t always work out that way. So went the ramblings of a sleepy eyed and sore body this morning. Since I was awake, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to share a few moments with you. I do hope you join the perhaps somnambulant yet also clear thoughts, thick with the night’s happenings, of this person you might recognise. Since they are one and the same, and it is I, then I hope so. You may laugh, cry and ponder the imponderables from  these ramblings.

“It was that sort of sleep in which you wake every hour and think to yourself that you have not been sleeping at all; you can remember dreams that are like reflections, daytime thinking slightly warped.”     ― Kim Stanley Robinson, Icehenge

There have been so many nights of late when sleep seems hard to hold onto. I can’t really explain why each time, and yet each time seems perfectly reasonable. I go to bed thinking of someone who is ill or having a hard time, and I spend the night in their company. I practise my Spiritual Healing and pray for their night to be easier. So many nights and so many people, friends, relatives, strangers I’ve merely heard about. I am transported on the back of a huge Powerful Owl and taken to where I am needed. Do I mind this broken sleep which leaves me exhausted and trembling? After the exhilarating rush from my magical Owl ride, well it’s time to “do my thing”.

#NighttimeRamblings

“I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?”   ― John Lennon

No, I never waste time considering this. I am privileged, and have always felt privileged, to be able to help in some small way, even if the person knows nothing of it. To me that is the blessing of being a healer, a Shaman, and a wielder of magic, as someone who cares about the world and all who live in it and the world itself. It is what I agreed to do when I entered this earthly coil, as a Spirit in Human form. I learn still about my place here on earth, but I work as I can, use my “magic’ and healing to aid those I am called to. Silently, and frequently with no-one the wiser that I have been involved in guarding their night’s sleep, their healing, or eased their passing. Such is as it should be, and will remain. This talk perhaps should never be, yet I have been absent so long, and this part of the reason why.

#NighttimeRambles

“Thus fortified I might take my rest in peace. But dreams come through stone walls, light up dark rooms, or darken light ones, and their persons make their exists and their entrances as they please, and laugh at locksmiths.”
― Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla

There are times when these night-time travels feel more like descents into horror as I work “my magic” attempting to bring some ease, some solace to those in pain, to the earth which shudders in agony. Mother Nature, Gaia, cries for release from the agony mankind inflicts on her.

At present there is yet another Cyclone wreaking havoc north of Australia … more people suffering, dying, their cries loud in my ears, reverberating in my heart. Who am I to turn away from these? What is a night of broken dreams, these I can easily make up later? Forgive my ignorance of geography… it has always been my downfall and yet it never stops me being taken by the hand, a Guardian Angel or my Guides and taken to where I might be helpful. I am humbled that I am able to be called and fulfil my part in this day, this night, these pain filled moments.

 #NighttimeRamblings

“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Critic as Artist

Yet last night was strange. Time after time I was hurled from sleep feeling that I was twisting on the end of a heavy rope, slowly choking, and my breath a whisper in my ears.

Perhaps that would have been alright but for the intense pain in my neck, as though I had, in reality and not my otherworldly dimension, been swinging from some gallows tree. Perhaps I was caught in the storm wrack wreckage, and suffocating in some other way. Morbid and difficult thoughts to lull one back to sleep. Was I in the present or the past? Does it matter at the moment? I find that once I have managed to get some real sleep I can, often with little difficulty, work out the real from the tempest tossed nightmares.

#NighttimeRambles

Even amidst the pain and suffering there are lessons to be learned. My trusting warm bundle, curled in my lap, reassured me that the day is like many others. Bella, my little love wrapped saviour, sighs contentedly as I type. Is this a simple sign that I am doing the right thing?

Dogs, indeed most animals have an almost uncanny ability to detect when something is wrong and lend their own love and support. Not just to me but to those I help. She cried piteously when my husband’s Uncle passed away recently. She now sits watch, guarding me whilst she sleeps so peacefully, yet awakens within a moment if she senses anything amiss.

#NighttimeRambles

“No matter how much you cry, the tears will dry. No matter how many nightmares, flashbacks, visions, or terrors you endure, they will pass. To weather these in order to find your true self and the happiness you deserve, that is not a risk. To waste the time you have in this body, never showing your soul to yourself or anyone else, living in fearful misery – that is really the most dangerous thing you can do.”
― Vironika Tugaleva, The Love Mindset

So I must believe that I am doing all the things I should. Healing where I may with the gifts I have been given. Quietly and unobtrusively, without fanfare or applause. Perhaps the time will come when these stories can be told. If the time arrives and t serves its purpose then share them I shall, but until then they remain the vague reasons for my absence and the increasing pull towards my bed. My wonderful bed, to catch up on the restful sleep the body needs to continue the work Spirit has asked of me and I have readily agree. I am no-one special. I am simply one more Spirit on this earth bound place who is learning how to be silently useful when I am called.

#NighttimeRambles

May your nights be restful and safe. May I be there should you need me or you call. May our journeys commence at each day break.

Blessings, Susan. ♥

“In our heart love comes unexpectedly without any doubt or hesitation; it comes in times of frustration or desperation. So when you feel it and have it, don’t let it go because it’s hard to find love.”   Author unknown

“Can I sleep here Mum?”

“Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer.”   Dean Koontz, False Memory

Some seven weeks ago I was thrilled to finally receive my beautiful, bouncing, bundle of joy! Now before anyone who knows me becomes convinced I am finally ready for a place on the funny farm, let me explain. My bundle of joy is a beautiful Mini Fox Terrier called Bella. She is a bouncing bundle of joy in every sense of every word. I am convinced that at times she truly has springs in her legs as she bounces beside me filled with mischief or glee.

My long wait for her has taken me through many a strange journey. I was determined after I lost my last dog, another Mini Foxie, Rusty, almost seven years ago, that I would never have another dog. He had been my constant and faithful companion for over eighteen years. He had been my confidant and protector for all that time and when he passed, peacefully, the heartbreak was more than I could handle. He was a part of my family and had seen me through some of the worst times in my life, thus far.

Looking for trouble – “Mum, Are you sure I can’t pull something out?”

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.
Josh Billings

Yet there was always that feeling of emptiness. The odd feeling that something was missing and more and more often, I found myself detouring into pet shops and gazing wistfully at the puppies. Finally I couldn’t fail to understand the message, Rusty was telling me it was time to find another friend. So the search began.

I scoured the rescue refuges and came away more disheartened by the week. It seems that in Queensland the only dogs not centenarians, by dog standards at least, were the size of horses. Really! Wolfhound x Staghound cross, Staghound x Rhodesian Ridgeback cross, Wolfhound x Ridgeback cross and on and on. They would be gigantic and in the city was no place for a huge dog. Not only that but I knew they would break my back (slight exaggeration only) as soon as they pulled on the leash.

I began to wonder if I was meant to have a dog at all as I began searching for breeders and could find none. When I did, no puppies for the foreseeable future. It appeared all the females were being given a break from breeding at the same time. Was this a message to wait longer?

Now, whilst this may sound out-of-place, I realised that this delay was simply another example of “Divine Timing”. When the right puppy was there for me I would find him or her. Conversely, as it occurs to me now, when I was absolutely ready then the right dog would be there for me.

Bella was born on November 5 last year, an odd date for me since it always brings back memories of Bonfire night and the Gunpowder Plot in England.

“I love you, Mum”

“Not a single creature on Earth has more or less right to be here.”   —  Anthony Douglas Williams

At nine weeks of age she barely covered my two palms, a truly small bundle of joy. Yet she filled my heart with a deep protective love and when she curled up on my lap, trusting and filled with love, I could deny my ‘baby’ nothing. Well within reason. I could almost hear Rusty telling her of the mischievous things he did and which she copied so faithfully. Running off with my slipper and hiding it where I would find her curled up asleep! The beautiful peep show as she pretended to be asleep and not hear me. It felt as though a part of my heart was suddenly swelling with this amazing joy and happiness. I was so grateful I had waited as long as I had.

Bella, the gardening Guru!

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”    ― Lao Tzu

Little Bella, who at 16 weeks weighs just 1.6kg with harness and lead dangling, had her final vaccination two days ago. St the vet’s insistence she was also given the 12 month heartworm vaccine. Having seen what heartworm can do to a dog I am in favour of the vaccination, previously done by monthly tablet. But she is still very small and was due one vaccination already. My concerns were overridden with a peremptory “Yes, she could have had this at 12 weeks!”

Since she had my precious cargo already clutched in her hands, it felt as though I was a hysterical “mother”. Bella had her two vaccinations and nails clipped before being returned to us looking very agitated. When we reached the car and I settled her on my lap her tiny eyes drooped shut immediately. Her head was like a ball of molten lava and the red hue of her temperature was livid through her short fur.

Bella has been almost “out of it” for two days, barely drinking and vomiting anything we attempted to feed her. This of course was after the three, almost projectile vomits after the vaccination.

I realise I sound melodramatic but thus tiny bundle has tied her chains around my heart as surely as Rusty had. If anything should happen to her… it would feel like losing a member of my family. She is a member of my family. So whilst I have done little bits here and there to this I’ve been preoccupied with her.

“Love lets no connection between you become stronger than you allow it.” -Susan Jamieson

“Can I sleep here Mum?”

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring–it was peace.”
Milan Kundera

I am a dog lover and I love my dog. In that I am unashamed. I hope you understand my story and my quick disappearance again.

Beautiful Orchids

“A garden should make you feel you’ve entered privileged space — a place not just set apart but reverberant — and it seems to me that, to achieve this, the gardener must put some kind of twist on the existing landscape, turn its prose into something nearer poetry.”
Michael Pollan, Second Nature: A Gardener’s Education
“There are many paths leading to a garden and many experiences awaiting those who venture in. No matter what your motive—whether to grow healthy, delicious food; spend time outdoors feeling more alive than your desk job allows; help save the planet; find relaxation, solace, or healing; meet your neighbors; get your hands in the sweet earth; or discover for yourself just how abundant and generous nature can be—a garden rarely disappoints. It’s a magnet for life in all its quirky, beautiful forms.”
Jane Shellenberger, Organic Gardener’s Companion: Growing Vegetables in the West

Just a brief pause in the daily grind, a short pause between the semi lucidity that appears before the next round of pills need to be taken.

I managed to look through my window whilst there was light outside, in fact as the sun rose above the rooftops. It was not sunrise, but the next best thing. That pause between the flare of sunrise and it’s promise of a golden day and the gentle light that bathes everything before the heat begins. So, I carefully extricated myself from my covers and hobbled out the door. Creeping as best as my limping would allow, an improbable sight, and one worthy of a photo, but that I couldn’t manage.

I opened the doors careful to make no sound lest my gentle hearted jailor nurse would hear and usher me back to bed, scolding me along the way. He has good reason, it’s not been the best of weeks, and all through a silly accident. Time not to dwell there today.

This morning I saw my Lady’s Slipper Orchid out in full bloom, a smorgasbord of shoots twisting together to make a wonderful welcome to the sunshine. Then I spied my Rose of Sharon, such a luscious deep red and I knew I had to take photos.  Those I have to share later, but I have plenty more to share now. My poor Hypericum had suffered in the heat and after a savage haircut to help the new shoots to grow, it was time to think about watering, I could hear my Hippeastrum’s calling.

“It’s being here now that’s important. There’s no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.”
George Harrison

I hobbled around the house, praying that unwinding the hose wouldn’t waken my husband, as the hose would sit between the windows of our bedroom. Who would think to put it there? No squeaking tap, the fairies are helping today, and we (the fairies and I) enjoyed a glorious hour watering the plants. You could see the fairies jumping between the globules of water and hear the sylphs playing amongst the puddles. They could have played longer, but I, I had to admit it was enough. Everything had been given a good drink.

Time almost ceased to exist as I watered, but eventually we come back to reality.

Hose draped over the holder, I carefully tip toed on those treacherous black tiles, back into the house. I crept around, closing the door so I could sneak inside and type this out. Time for “Pain Killers” is shrieking in my head, well, in my hips and legs, but that’s for another day.

Enjoy my brief escape into garden whimsy.

“When told the reason for Daylight Saving time the old Indian said, “Only a white man would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket and sew it to the bottom of a blanket and have a longer blanket.” ~Author Unknown

Sorceress of Golden Dragon

It was that magical hour

The powerful most time

Man called the ‘witching hour’

If they only knew

The power to be found

Opening their senses to this

The most incredible of times

Sweet eldritch chimes

With unhurried step she glided forth

Her back to the house

As she moved to the north

Towards the grove

Deep in the woods

The Sacred grove

The magical circle

Where time could be suspended

As well as all man’s rules of should

Replaced instead by power filled could

Within the circle

Ground laid bare

Sisters one and all

Gathered there once more

To join in joyous splendour

No man could perforce engender

To create a celebration new

Which called for self-surrender

Opening all to wider mysteries

Of power most sublime

Believed lost for all time

Yet living still in hearts and minds

Of every member of her kind

#MagicalPower

colourful bejewelled dragons

A grove surrounded

By Birch and Elder

Hawthorn and Rowan

Magical all

Whose power had shown true

To those who had known

The power available to the few

Remaining of the dragon kind

Of such a one was she

Who knew the magic of the tree

To be called upon in knowledge

Power unforgotten by the few

Once more to be set free

As the moment of high power drew near

No potions or spells

Neither a descent into hell

Just power gathering within herself

Of knowledge long learned

By those who yet yearned

To recapture the ways of old

No longer freely told

Into herself she turned her bright gaze

Her mind’s eye once more fiercely ablaze

With the glow of potent magic

Of power most true

Building a great vortex anew

Preparing herself to step through

 ∼

The corner once called

The elements true

Spirits and elementals they knew

The fierce glow from her grew

Her favourite hue

Enveloped them all in the circle she drew

Til it appeared to all

She was all but consumed

By the fires she wielded inside

For her essence distilled

By the power she willed

He form to transform once more

 ∼

Sharpening her focus

With each beat of her heart

Joy held inside but a part

The power of her mind

She bent to her will

Til in her place stood a glorious beast

A dragon of old

Sparkling once more like beaten gold

Larger than all life

A picture of might and awe

With a primal cry of command

Beat her wings on demand

Followed by her brethren below

Dragons of colour profound

Metallic hues did abound

As they launched away from the land

Some to return with the dawn

Return to the land

To the call of the Sacred Grove

To gather yet more of this new treasure trove

Of priceless magical beats

Of every metallic hue imagined

From times long ago

To fly in the night once more

Releasing their magic on this new shore.

#HomewardBound

She was amazed still

After so many years had passed

Seeing the Sacred Standing Stones

Knowing the beauty would forever last

As it had through long years past

∼

Walking softly through the pillars high

Beneath the lintel, blocking the sky

Into the midst of magic felt

Swirling around her, gooseflesh felt

∼

So different arriving in this way

Her human form, so powerful yet frail

Always a surprise which form to choose

Wolf and Owl, her favourites of all

Powerful and wise

Fast and Silent

With legs or wings

Deadly if needed

Running or soaring over the far hills

To reach this magical gateway

The Portal Stone

Home, Not in one day

∼

Floating across the warmed ground

With snow lying thick all around

She approached the Sacred Portal

Glyphs glowing as she glided near

Sweet musical humming in her ear

She smiled, breathing deeply, waiting now

As she felt him swiftly arrive on silent wings

Now striding forth through the Sacred Ring

∼

Together again and Homeward Bound

Two lovers stepped forth

Glimmering brightly in the light

Then, disappeared from earthly sight

Without a sound.

The white wolf stood

Like a statue frozen in place

Poised on the edge of flight

Trembling, she gazed into the moonlight

Eyes searching for a way into the woods

Silently she crept onwards

Alert for the slightest sound

Anything which would send her flying for cover

Racing until safety was once more found

Heart racing, she eventually reached the shadows

Giant Elm, Sycamore and Oak

Spread their branches over her

Breathing a sigh of relief

One heart stopping moment of disbelief

She changed

One moment a wolf white as snow

The next a tall slender woman

With hair of gossamer white

Trailed by a snow-white owl

Turning quickly she moved through the woods

Following the shade of the trees

Crossing the moonlit groves

Moving carefully onwards

Until before her stretched the open vista

Leading to the magical Stones

Wreathed in the magical glow of the moonlight

They sang the hypnotic song to her

A radiant smile played around her red lips

As she stepped into the magical circle

Quickly praying to the Goddess above

She walked to the central stone

One touch

One word

The air shimmered

Sparks flew like snowflakes

Where a woman stood moments before

Vanished without a trace

Except

In a crevice at the base on the stone

A small white blossom tossed its head

A soft white snowflake

To join others dotted around the circle

A gift from Priestess to Goddess

As she crossed safely into magic’s realm once more

The Power from on High

 The circle formed

Arms held high

Energy building nigh

Silently told, prayers unfold

Magic raised to heights untold

The vortex raised towards the sky

Towards the glorious Goddess floating by

Calling to her daughters

The time for magic’s mystery is nigh

Inside the vortex coalesced

A form of gold and purple hues

The Sorceress at her brightly best

Stood motionless, centred at her Goddess’ behest

Silently communing

Energetically consuming

High powers never before felt

Controlled by one who dwelt

In human form found

Travelling Through Time

Amidst the circle of ancient stones

She stood without thought

Feeling a calling deep in her bones

The dangers unknown are naught

Drawn forward, her mind caught

She steps onwards

Her destiny sought

Into a whirlwind she fought

Energies unknown of no import

To keep her mind focused

On the one who waited

To who she is fated

Her love, her life, all she sought

Stumbling suddenly forward

Strong arms encircled her fragile form

Heart to heart, beat to beat, life returned to norm

A new life of dangers yet to be met

A war set to start before the moon set

Riding forth with haste

Hoof beats heard, in close chase

Lost in the foggy wreaths of swift pace

To reach the safety of the manse

Once safely inside

A marriage, to continue the romance.

As she stepped through the door

Her eyes drifted skyward

No need to be on guard

Ebony sky sparkling

Stars mesmerising

The Goddess rising over the horizon

A secretive smile played over red lips

The times had changed

Like a new lovers’ kiss

Blessings, shining brightly

With the Full moons’ embrace

The Executive Sorceress strode forth

Time now to hurry north

Her sister’s already gathering

˜

Standing under the moonlight

She took a breath to calm her mind

A second to sink within

Her mind formed a clear image

A Snowy Owl sparkling brightly

Her breath trickled slowly

Through her parted lips

The air shimmered brilliantly

Like sunlight on new cut crystal

Arms raised to the sky

Whirling through the air

The Snowy Owl flapped her powerful wings

Speeding away to the north

˜

Over the silent lake

Past the quiet woods

Quickly flying forth

From eyes seeing afar

From East, West and South

She saw her sisters arriving

With a wild cry of joy

She swooped earthward

Into the circle with her sisters

Celebrating the Goddess, the moon

Welcoming the Executive Sorceress

A new world

A new life

A new you.
