Travelling

Immortality

Moving

Eternally

Through the smallest of increments

Of measured moments

As the shimmering incandescence

Settled into an everlasting

And evanescent form

Of an elemental being

Scales of iridescent gold and blue

Glittering in the velvety dark

The Gold Dragon’s beautiful form

Filling the silent cavern

With the hair tingling effects of magic

∼

As she rippled briefly

Changing her form within the beat of a human heart

When the eye watering brilliance faded

In the mighty dragons stead

There stood an beautiful ephemeral creature

Hair of deepest moonless black

Hanging down below her waist in ebony waves

Translucent skin glowing with a golden otherworldly glow

Her eyes shone brightly like an azure sapphire

This beautiful magical creature

Twice blessed with beauty

A glittering dragon in female form

A dark-haired beauty in human form

Able to wander this land again

Searching……

Searching for salvation for her kind

Travelling

Immortality

Moving

Eternally

#Through the Portal Stones

She was on no path she had seen before

When she left the shelter of the trees

And saw on the crest of the tor

A giant circle of standing stones

Her feet carried her forwards

Closer still to the circle of stones

A fey energy she felt as she neared them

And she felt the hair on her body

Stand straight and stiff from some strange force

Yet her feet took her inexorably onwards

Until in the centre of the circle she stopped

Engulfed in an incredible feeling of peace

Of ages long gone and questions of possibility

All thought and feeling fled

As the silence of the countryside was broken

By strange noises all around her

Of men shouting and others whispering quietly

She knew not if her pursuers had found her

Voices seeming to call just beside her ear

Stumbling as she looked around in the mist

Stumbling, she flung her hand out to stop falling

Instead her hand struck the standing stone

Light flashed and sudden darkness engulfed her

The stones were still in front of her

Yet the sounds of people moving silently surrounded her

More voices she now heard calling

Deep, gruff and quietly fierce

She stumbled again unbalanced

Brought up short by the prick of a knife

Held quickly up to her throat

Men, wild of hair and beard

Dressed in ragged and dirty clothes like kilts

Seemed to whirl around her with smooth Scottish lilts

As they began to hustle her away from the stones

She struggled, and opened her mouth

To scream aloud her protest

But the hand over her face

Cut off sound and most of her breath

Fearing to be left to rot

Her throat cut from ear to ear

She stumbled on the uneven ground

Loose from her captor she whirled aside

Turning back towards the circle once more

Seconds flew past like mid summers day

An age for each short moment of time

She reached the portal and ran through

Looking back to see if she was followed

She saw the flame haired giant with eyes of sapphire

Brilliantly blue in the mist staring into her heart

He seemed to be a part of her in some strange way

Lovers from another day?

Image courtesy of http://www.ephotozine.com                    Magic of the Standing Stones

Breathe purling in white wreaths from her mouth She moved deeper under the shelter of the ancient Oak tree A shimmering bent the air as A beautiful woman in a purple cape stood sheltered Within the arms of the old tree Deeper in shadow than before A prayer to Luna, moon Goddess, Shine your brilliance this night upon us all But yet hide your radiance from my luminescent skin The sounds of the spell caster following her trail Too close to chance the glow of her face calling him nearer One more leap to reach the Sacred Grove One more chance to journey through to their world again She sent forth her thoughts into the crystalline night There, high in this very tree, the wise and knowing gaze of the Owl A shimmering of her form saw her body become like mist

#Escape through the portal

Image courtesy of animals.timduru.org         She flew as the Owl, her guardian this night.

In its stead a large Snowy Owl Launching itself aloft it sped through the night The screech of the hunter on her trail Swooping down in to the midst of the Sacred Grove Encircled by Alder, Ash, Willow and Holly She landed lightly, shimmering once more into her human form From beneath the Willow strode forth a man, Gathering her close they breathed a silent prayer of thanks Turning they faced the silent stone circle Bowing their heads before the Gods They strode quickly to the portal A sound of pure hatred and rage Pierced the air with a scream As they stepped through the portal Blinding light flashed briefly As the furious raptor circled the grove Emptiness greeted his eyes as the light faded A flash of purple all that remained of her cape His prey had returned to their own time and place For this chase, his time was over.

Glittering shafts of sunlight

Flashed like sparkling diamonds

Amidst tall strands of seaweed

Colourful fish swam lazily amongst trailing plants

Zipping nervously away from strange shadows

Safely avoiding the gaping maws

Of the giant grouper

She sat quite still and watched the scene

Seemingly floating before her eyes

The peaceful way everything moved

From colourful fish to dainty seahorse

Brilliant coral and mesmerizing anemone

She was entranced by all around her

From the corner of her eye she saw a larger shape

As it drew closer she saw a beautiful face

Surrounded by hair the colour of sun drenched coral

With skin the colour of milk

Surprised but not alarmed

She watched the figure approach

To her bewilderment she saw

Stretching behind this beautiful woman

A long muscular tail

Just like those of the fishes she had admired

Curiousity kept her still

As this vision swam up to her

With eyes the colour of emeralds

And lips the colour of rubies

She heard a voice inside her mind

Softly speaking to her

“Oh why aren’t you with us Selene?

The sailors will be coming out quite soon

You know how much fun it is

To sing to them, and see their faces

As they almost run to move their  cumbersome boats?

In total surprise I looked around me

And in amazement I clearly saw

A long and muscular tail

Floating behind me as I lay on the rocks

Slowly lifting and falling to my unconscious design

I agreed to follow this vision

It seemed the thing to do

No words were spoken

At least no human words

She heard each and every thought I had

And all day long I swam and frolicked

With this group of colourful mermaids

Such fun I had as I could never remember before

Yet, quite suddenly I felt an enormous tugging

And I felt towed backwards by an unseen force

I saw my underwater wonderland flash past

I wondered if this thought was to be my last

When I found myself on the edge of the rock pool

Where I had lain down to peer into its depths

My face had fallen into the cool blue water

Bringing me back to myself once more

Had I dreamed this wonderful interlude

Of mermaids frolicking in emerald depths

Or was I indeed one of their kind

Just visiting the land for a time

I suppose I might find out

The next time I come visit my rock pool.

The days of magic and sorcery seem long past. There seems little evidence of Wizards or Witches, Sorcerers or Sorceresses, Elves and Gnomes, Fairies, Sprites and Sylphs. Yet underneath all the trappings of our great modern world there lies hidden the old beliefs that all these still exist. We simply need to learn to look quickly out of the corner of our eyes and we can see them still.

But that is another tale for another time. Tonight, the hour is late and music seems to soothe the savage beast.

So I thought of something that captured that imagination of the savage beast, the magic and lust for life and found a song to do all that. It’s an oldie but still good. Who could forget Meatloaf’s rendition of “I’d do Anything for Love”?

Inspired by The Phantom of the Opera he captured the essence of the tormented magician/sorcerer in love with the beautiful woman. Love conquers all – as it should. I hope you enjoy it.

#BetweenTwoWorlds

~~~~~~~~
The water was icy on her skin
Her thin shoes soaked long ago
Still they trudged along
In single file snaking their way forward
Now climbing the side of the valley
Towards the Lairds keep
She longed to rest but kept going
The leader had been in a fury on seeing her
Brought forward by the men who found her
Hiding beside the stones atop the tor
~~~~~~~~~

She dared not tell them why or how she was there

How could she tell them the truth?

That she had walked through the portal stones

Upon the tor now far behind them

Traveling through time

In a way she did not understood

To meet her husband once again

To be with her lover for a while

~~~~~~~~~
A shudder rippled through her body
As she pondered her predicament
The moon was several days from full
The time when the change would occur
Yet its effects she could already sense
When for a while she could run safe and free
With her pack mate and lover
Days of blissful togetherness
Running these wild Scottish valleys
Drinking from the fresh streams
Waiting for the moon to turn
~~~~~~~~~~

When she would reclaim her female form

And her lover change to his own

Tall and proud with deep red hair

His Scottish brogue a music to her ears

She had but days to stay with him

Before she must go back to the tor

Back through the portal stones

To reclaim her life back there

~~~~~~~~~~
Waiting for the turning of the days
Til she could once more traverse the ways
And return to her lovers’ side once more
Wolf or human they belonged together
Her best days were always with him
Amongst the Scottish heather
But where was he?
Why wasn’t he here?
~~~~~~~~~~

She spied a furtive movement amongst the trees

The light was fading fast but her eyesight was keen

There he was keeping pace with her

Waiting for the shadows to fall

She knew that somehow, some way

He would find a way to break her free

And together they would roam

Back amongst their well-trodden ways.

#Dusk til Dawn

image from onajourneybacktoherwings.blogspot.com

~

The sun’s golden orb slipped slowly from the sky

Down behind the far mountains

Shrouded in mist

Changing colour from white to yellow

Vibrant orange appeared like a painters brush

Swept across the skies

Only to change to a vermillion swirl

Deepening to violet

As the sun finally slipped behind the mountain

Leaving a glowing coronet around its head

~

Sky chasing the sun

Hues blending together to form a deep dreamless dark

So dark it appears black and not blue

Such a wonderful calming hue

Yet on the far horizon a change is seen

A mellow gleam rises it seems from the ocean

Rising majestically

Its white gold hue with shades of gold

That appears there too

Marking the march of time

Until the hour finally arrives

#Dusk til Dawn

She slips quietly from her bed

Clothes hidden beneath the stairs

Gathered quickly she changes

Moving silently out the door

The evening rain had swollen the frame

And it squeals in protests at its stealthy close

She stops silently waiting as her heart beats loudly

But silence reigns inside the manse

Slippered feet are soon drenched

Yet her feet flee lightly over the grass

Heading for the welcoming shadow of the trees

Once deeply shaded a large black wolf

Materialises at her side

Smiling she places her hand caressingly on his head

A shimmer ripples around him

Standing there is a tall man, dark of hair

Gazing deeply into each other eyes

They embrace

A timeless love reconnected in forever

~

As they break apart their fingertips barely touching

A shimmering warps the air around them

Standing in their place

The large black wolf and an ethereal white she wolf

Loping off together they join their pack

Racing silently through the night

At rest they lie side by side

His head on her shoulder

Her head resting lovingly on his

As dawn draws near they retrace their path

In deep shadow they wait for the last few moments

Moving slightly apart a simmering warps the air

Standing next to the large black wolf

The ethereal lady in white

Softly caressing his head

She turns and runs quickly back

Tears stream down her face as she reaches the house

As she gazes longing back to the woods

The sun just making its appearance in the heavens

She sees two golden eyes gleaming

As a mournful howl splits the air

Until the morrow whilst the full moon shines

She can visit her true love

And yearn for the turning of the moon

Til she is free to be with him once more.

#Love's Fickle Friend

image from artelartlivejournal.com

Far away

In a place cool and comfortable

Amid trees green and colourful flowers

The air heavy with scents of the forest

Bees hum brings a somnolence to the day

Stray beams of sunlight

Lance down through overarching tree branches

Patterned by the mosaic of leaves

A slowly running brook cheerfully burbles

Drawing travellers to the glade

Deep into the centre of the serene shade

Laughter lightly tinkling

As she flew around the glade

Hid the sadness in her heart

In pieces on the ground

Torn asunder by the one

Who told her

She was the one

The one he’d love forever

And protect from all harm

But daylight now has woken

And dreams are hard to hold

Her lover, he has left her

With a lonely loving heart

Laugh loud and sweetly fair one

Let the musical brook soothe you

Allow the sibilance of the trees caress you

And the downy grass cocoon you

Love’s touch can oft be fickle

A heart is easily broken

But hope must fly forever

If loves game we hope to win.

The Pact
#The Pact

Image from xose00100.deviantart.com

“We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be –the mythologized epitome of a savage ruthless killer – which is, in reality, no more than a reflected image of ourself.”
Farley Mowat, Never Cry Wolf : Amazing True Story of Life Among Arctic Wolves

Silence

Weighed heavily as she waited

Hanging like a wet cloak on her shoulders

Wind

Whipped through the tops of the trees

Bringing gusts lashing the grass below

Rolling lines flowed away from her

As the wind blew the grass towards the plain

Confetti like fluttering heralded the autumn leaves

Fluttering

In colourful swathes around her head

In the silence she could hear them coming

Talking softly to each other

No need to shout

When the mind can say so much more

A pause

As they picked up her scent

Her family, her once family

Questions flickered swiftly through her mind

Why was she here?

Two legs could not be seen with the pack

Heart breaking silently she pleaded with them

Lift the promise she made

Her time with the two legs could end now

The pack was safe its territory secure

No longer was the bargain required

That one of the pack should stay with the two legs

Become one of the two legs

So they could feel safe

Safe that the pack would no longer bring them down

When they ventured into the pack’s territory

Puzzled they asked her

Why should the pact be broken?

Her family could hunt and kill the deer

The two legs no longer hunted them for their pelts

The cubs could grow in safety

Run with the wind

Play with the salmon

Raise their cubs in time

Two legs could never be trusted

If she returned

Two legs would hunt them once again

Thoughts were becoming fainter now

As the pack moved further away

Wait!

She silently cried to the night

Let me return! Let  Me  Return……

Silence

Weighed heavily as she waited

Hanging like a wet cloak on her shoulders

A heavy shroud for her heavy heart.

#Between Worlds

~~~~~~~~~~
Bitter
Frost ridden wind
Caught deep inside her throat
Swirling
Like wraiths amongst the trees
Gnarled
Roots seemed to pull her feet
Gripping tightly to
Her satin slippers as she ran
A mournful howl
Echoing intense dread
Ripped across the silent moors
Glancing back
She could see a pair of blood red eyes
Peering hungrily in her direction
Heartbeat
Hammering in her veins
She pushed herself even faster
The trees themselves seemed to reach towards her
Welcoming in their evil embrace
The spell caster had wrought his magic well
Find
Bind
Kill
But never to let her go.
~~~~~~~~~

Ahead

The merest lightening of the sky

As the moon rose over the horizon

Time

Was running faster now

A consequence

Of the spell caster’s work

His Lord’s desire

Never to relinquish his claim

Over her body

But her heart

Belonged to the one who awaited her

On the far side of the portal

Between the standing stones

~~~~~~~~~
Finally free of the overhanging trees
Her dress blew free from her entangled legs
As she sped across the hillocky ground
Ahead the stones stood proud
Silhouetted in the growing brilliance of the moonlight
Suddenly
A blood curdling howl ripped apart the silence
Stumbling, she risked a glance behind
To see two evil red eyes
Their heat scalding on her back
~~~~~~~~~

#Between Worlds

image from owlsandorchids.com

Her trembling feet hit the smooth ground near the stones

The moon rose high in the sky

Just to her right the glistening light of the portal

Fetid breath almost overwhelmed her

An arm reached through the portal

Taking hold of her hand

Bringing her a new found strength

An eldritch howl pierced the night

She smiled at the sight which welcomed her

Through the swirling portal

Between the standing stones

Sighing

She stepped through.
