#TheOnlyChoice

It was close to dawn

The air frosty with a bite that went to the bone

She had on only a thin cotton dress

The only other had been left at home

Home, what was that but a place to sleep

Somewhere to eat and feel less than wanted

A house that was nothing more than a roof over her head

One she no longer wanted nor cared for.

She knew he would be looking for her soon

The man who was her fleshly husband

Searching quietly through each room

Anger would flare when he found her missing

This, her only chance to flee

Giving her a real choice to be

That which she really was

A noise behind her alerted her to dawn

The search for her had commenced

She could stay no longer

The dress, irrelevant in but a few more moments

The sun began its lukewarm climb over the horizon

Pale crimson and gold fingers pointed over the land

She stood tall and raised her hands to the sky

Towards the power of the winter sun

Taking a deep breath

She drew the energy of the sun into her heart

Shaking loose long auburn hair

Ready to take her part

In the distance she heard a forlorn howl

Her form writhed sinuously

Energy coalesced around her

Blurring the outlines of her human form

Once dissipated there stood a sleek wolf

Her hair a deep auburn colour

Lifting her head she howled joyously

The sound being joined by the other, closing swiftly

As they met, jumping with abandon around each other

They nuzzled each other happily

Shouts behind them from the house

Disturbed their welcome of each other

Bright sherry coloured eyes gazed knowingly

Together they loped off quickly through the forest

Her prison shattered for the last time.

#TheMidnightCaller

Death comes calling

The Midnight Caller

∼

Twas death himself I’m sure

Waiting silently outside my door

Though no door I’ve ever seen

Could keep him away once lured.

∼

He held out his hand

Pale and slim

Yet warm and strong

Inviting

“Take my hand and walk with me

You know that’s what you want it to be

No more pain and strife

No hurt or tears

Not even one more for this sharp life”.

∼

But as ever before my answer came

To these beguiling words from Death

“Even for the heartsore

I cannot follow you yet.

My time is not right now

There are others her in this life

Who still need me on this side

They may not know just why or how

But deep inside I know this.

I cannot leave this life

Nor desert them in this way”.

∼

This life is heavy

My heart bowed down

No answers can be found

In despair I stand and pray for answers

My belief: that they can be found

∼

I sensed a smile play around his mouth

A sparkle in dark eyes

“I see you have not yet given up the fight

So, one more I must bid you, Goodnight

Remember though, I am always here

Waiting for your call

When midnight chimes awaken you

Remember, I wait for you too.”

#HomewardBound

She was amazed still

After so many years had passed

Seeing the Sacred Standing Stones

Knowing the beauty would forever last

As it had through long years past

∼

Walking softly through the pillars high

Beneath the lintel, blocking the sky

Into the midst of magic felt

Swirling around her, gooseflesh felt

∼

So different arriving in this way

Her human form, so powerful yet frail

Always a surprise which form to choose

Wolf and Owl, her favourites of all

Powerful and wise

Fast and Silent

With legs or wings

Deadly if needed

Running or soaring over the far hills

To reach this magical gateway

The Portal Stone

Home, Not in one day

∼

Floating across the warmed ground

With snow lying thick all around

She approached the Sacred Portal

Glyphs glowing as she glided near

Sweet musical humming in her ear

She smiled, breathing deeply, waiting now

As she felt him swiftly arrive on silent wings

Now striding forth through the Sacred Ring

∼

Together again and Homeward Bound

Two lovers stepped forth

Glimmering brightly in the light

Then, disappeared from earthly sight

Without a sound.

#Promises

Aching thoughts of a lost love

Promises

I told you I’d be back

But you couldn’t wait that long

I promised gifts and treasure

Yet before that you were gone

How could I be so wrong –again?

Then gifts and treasures, too small for you

Were the all love that my heart could hold

More than enough to fill your heart and soul

Enough to fill your world with everything you wanted

A heart to hold every breath you breathe, so softly

Arms to melt every ache you felt, so tenderly

A mind to remember every loving wish, so caringly

All to bring magic back in your life, so brilliantly

A paradise unimagined by anyone else

Was yours for free

If you waited for me

But you were gone

Gone so far from me

All my gifts lie unopened

Unwanted and neglected

The love I have is in my heart

A heart now broken and unwanted

Pain and heartache lie within a withered husk

All I have is a hole where it used to be

So I pray with the tiny spark I have left

Let the emptiness of the Universe fill that hole

All that I can hope for to recreate my soul

To breathe life into that withered husk

The husk that remains of a once filled heart

Universe willing I can find the strength to carry on

Without this small hope life isn’t worth going on

For me, this is the last time to fight for life

It is, quite simply, the last fight

Hello death, my erstwhile companion

You have my reservation.

#NightVisitor

Enter the land of possibility….. sleep

Night Visitor

High in the tower

She sat and looked around her

The world flowed away to the horizon

Moonlight shone softly through the trees

The stars flickered across the heavens

Here and there a figure could be seen

Flying across the night sky

Travellers through time and space

Where they were going

Only they knew

In ones or twos

Sometimes a few

Travelling to some distant place

A sigh of contentment escaped her lips

As a smile spread across her mouth

Shone brightly in her eyes

With the beginning of a thought

She drifted out from the tower

Floating away across the land

Towards a place and time long past

Where love and laughter would always last

Loved ones long gone would reappear

Memories shared of lives held dear

To a land of verdant green

Towering trees of giant form

Surrounding her with their heady balm

She slowly dropped from the sky

Landing amidst a carpet of bluebells

She saw amongst the trees

Faces loved and long ago seen

Moving forward

Smiles wreathing every face

Love flowing from every heart

As heart and mind rejoiced anew

Time sped past all too soon

When she must return

To her time and place

Where she lay sleeping

Dreaming of loved ones faces

Until once more she flew through the night

To share once more such beloved sight

The Power from on High

 The circle formed

Arms held high

Energy building nigh

Silently told, prayers unfold

Magic raised to heights untold

The vortex raised towards the sky

Towards the glorious Goddess floating by

Calling to her daughters

The time for magic’s mystery is nigh

Inside the vortex coalesced

A form of gold and purple hues

The Sorceress at her brightly best

Stood motionless, centred at her Goddess’ behest

Silently communing

Energetically consuming

High powers never before felt

Controlled by one who dwelt

In human form found

The Sorceress of powers yet to be bound

Travelling Through Time

Amidst the circle of ancient stones

She stood without thought

Feeling a calling deep in her bones

The dangers unknown are naught

Drawn forward, her mind caught

She steps onwards

Her destiny sought

Into a whirlwind she fought

Energies unknown of no import

To keep her mind focused

On the one who waited

To who she is fated

Her love, her life, all she sought

Stumbling suddenly forward

Strong arms encircled her fragile form

Heart to heart, beat to beat, life returned to norm

A new life of dangers yet to be met

A war set to start before the moon set

Riding forth with haste

Hoof beats heard, in close chase

Lost in the foggy wreaths of swift pace

To reach the safety of the manse

Once safely inside

A marriage, to continue the romance.

#The Midnight Caller
Death can be beguiling and enticing.

The Midnight Caller

Twas death himself, I know

Waiting silently outside my door

Though no door I’ve ever known

Could keep him away once lured.

≈

He held out his hand

Pale and slim

Yet somehow I knew also warm and strong

“Take my hand and walk with me

Away from all you feel

You know that’s what you want to do.

Leave all the pain and strife behind

No further hurt, no tears, no fight

Not even one more struggle

To suffer in this life.”

≈

But as ever before my answer came

To the beguiling words from death

“Even though I may be heartsore

I cannot follow you yet

My time to leave is not yet now

There are others here in this life

Who still need me on this side.

They may not know just how or why

But this light I have deep inside, knows this.

So, once again I say to you, No.

I cannot leave this life.

Nor ever desert them in this way

Though my heart bleeds daily for release.”

≈

This life is heavy

My heart bowed down

No way forward can be found

In despair I stand and pray for answers

Stubborn belief they can be found.

≈

I sensed a smile play around his mouth

A sparkle in the depths of his eyes

“I see you have not yet given up this fight

So once again I must bid you goodnight.

Remember though that I am always here

Waiting for your call

When midnight chimes awaken you

Remember, I wait for you too.”

≈

I cannot prove who called this night

At the stroke of the midnight hour

Yet the voice, the words echoed familiarly

And the essence I felt I knew.

≈

In my heart I know

Death called this night

And once more I closed the door.

#TheRevenge

She found them lying broken

Beyond the smoking remains

Broken by deaths embrace

Father, brother, their killers to trace

Mother to save, offering solace

She buried them swiftly

A cairn a small solace.

From the ashes dipped

Fingers to face

She painted dark lace

From when came the knowing

She knew not nor cared

Yet deep in her heart

Knowledge set

Her feet on the path

To follow.

Through forest unknown

She followed their trail

Twig, leaf, hoof print

Never to fail

Finally a light

Shinning fitfully in the night.

 ≈

A veil came down

Clouding her mind

Narrowing her senses anew

Wood smoke and whiskey

Blood and…..more.

Tied to a tree she found her

Broken and abused

Her knife severed her bonds

A cloak to cover her pain

Slipping away

Foes to be slain.

The curtain fell once more

Blood haze before her eyes

Softly through the trees she melted

In silence Death moved unseen

No sound from her passing

Claiming due vengeance

One by one

Til there were none.

Back to the only home they knew

To build a life anew

Time for wounds to heal

Memories to seal

Vengeance claimed, no appeal.

In this time

We may never see it

Never have to believe it

Not for us to keep score

No evil goes unnoticed

No evil goes unpunished

Not for you, nor I to judge.

#TheMermaid

image from walldeskpaper.blogspot

Glittering shafts of sunlight

Flashed like sparkling diamonds

Amidst tall strands of seaweed

Colourful fish swam lazily amongst trailing plants

Zipping nervously away from strange shadows

Safely avoiding the gaping maws

Of the giant grouper

She sat quite still and watched the scene

Seemingly floating before her eyes

The peaceful way everything moved

From colourful fish to dainty seahorse

Brilliant coral and mesmerizing anemone

She was entranced by all around her

From the corner of her eye she saw a larger shape

As it drew closer she saw a beautiful face

Surrounded by hair the colour of sun drenched coral

With skin the colour of milk

Surprised but not alarmed

She watched the figure approach

To her bewilderment she saw

Stretching behind this beautiful woman

A long muscular tail

Just like those of the fishes she had admired

Curiousity kept her still

As this vision swam up to her

With eyes the colour of emeralds

And lips the colour of rubies

She heard a voice inside her mind

Softly speaking to her

“Oh why aren’t you with us Selene?

The sailors will be coming out quite soon

You know how much fun it is

To sing to them, and see their faces

As they almost run to move their  cumbersome boats?

In total surprise I looked around me

And in amazement I clearly saw

A long and muscular tail

Floating behind me as I lay on the rocks

Slowly lifting and falling to my unconscious design

I agreed to follow this vision

It seemed the thing to do

No words were spoken

At least no human words

She heard each and every thought I had

And all day long I swam and frolicked

With this group of colourful mermaids

Such fun I had as I could never remember before

Yet, quite suddenly I felt an enormous tugging

And I felt towed backwards by an unseen force

I saw my underwater wonderland flash past

I wondered if this thought was to be my last

When I found myself on the edge of the rock pool

Where I had lain down to peer into its depths

My face had fallen into the cool blue water

Bringing me back to myself once more

Had I dreamed this wonderful interlude

Of mermaids frolicking in emerald depths

Or was I indeed one of their kind

Just visiting the land for a time

I suppose I might find out

The next time I come visit my rock pool.
