She was amazed still

After so many years had passed

Seeing the Sacred Standing Stones

Knowing the beauty would forever last

As it had through long years past

∼

Walking softly through the pillars high

Beneath the lintel, blocking the sky

Into the midst of magic felt

Swirling around her, gooseflesh felt

∼

So different arriving in this way

Her human form, so powerful yet frail

Always a surprise which form to choose

Wolf and Owl, her favourites of all

Powerful and wise

Fast and Silent

With legs or wings

Deadly if needed

Running or soaring over the far hills

To reach this magical gateway

The Portal Stone

Home, Not in one day

∼

Floating across the warmed ground

With snow lying thick all around

She approached the Sacred Portal

Glyphs glowing as she glided near

Sweet musical humming in her ear

She smiled, breathing deeply, waiting now

As she felt him swiftly arrive on silent wings

Now striding forth through the Sacred Ring

∼

Together again and Homeward Bound

Two lovers stepped forth

Glimmering brightly in the light

Then, disappeared from earthly sight

Without a sound.

The white wolf stood

Like a statue frozen in place

Poised on the edge of flight

Trembling, she gazed into the moonlight

Eyes searching for a way into the woods

Silently she crept onwards

Alert for the slightest sound

Anything which would send her flying for cover

Racing until safety was once more found

Heart racing, she eventually reached the shadows

Giant Elm, Sycamore and Oak

Spread their branches over her

Breathing a sigh of relief

One heart stopping moment of disbelief

She changed

One moment a wolf white as snow

The next a tall slender woman

With hair of gossamer white

Trailed by a snow-white owl

Turning quickly she moved through the woods

Following the shade of the trees

Crossing the moonlit groves

Moving carefully onwards

Until before her stretched the open vista

Leading to the magical Stones

Wreathed in the magical glow of the moonlight

They sang the hypnotic song to her

A radiant smile played around her red lips

As she stepped into the magical circle

Quickly praying to the Goddess above

She walked to the central stone

One touch

One word

The air shimmered

Sparks flew like snowflakes

Where a woman stood moments before

Vanished without a trace

Except

In a crevice at the base on the stone

A small white blossom tossed its head

A soft white snowflake

To join others dotted around the circle

A gift from Priestess to Goddess

As she crossed safely into magic’s realm once more

#Through the Portal Stones

She was on no path she had seen before

When she left the shelter of the trees

And saw on the crest of the tor

A giant circle of standing stones

Her feet carried her forwards

Closer still to the circle of stones

A fey energy she felt as she neared them

And she felt the hair on her body

Stand straight and stiff from some strange force

Yet her feet took her inexorably onwards

Until in the centre of the circle she stopped

Engulfed in an incredible feeling of peace

Of ages long gone and questions of possibility

All thought and feeling fled

As the silence of the countryside was broken

By strange noises all around her

Of men shouting and others whispering quietly

She knew not if her pursuers had found her

Voices seeming to call just beside her ear

Stumbling as she looked around in the mist

Stumbling, she flung her hand out to stop falling

Instead her hand struck the standing stone

Light flashed and sudden darkness engulfed her

The stones were still in front of her

Yet the sounds of people moving silently surrounded her

More voices she now heard calling

Deep, gruff and quietly fierce

She stumbled again unbalanced

Brought up short by the prick of a knife

Held quickly up to her throat

Men, wild of hair and beard

Dressed in ragged and dirty clothes like kilts

Seemed to whirl around her with smooth Scottish lilts

As they began to hustle her away from the stones

She struggled, and opened her mouth

To scream aloud her protest

But the hand over her face

Cut off sound and most of her breath

Fearing to be left to rot

Her throat cut from ear to ear

She stumbled on the uneven ground

Loose from her captor she whirled aside

Turning back towards the circle once more

Seconds flew past like mid summers day

An age for each short moment of time

She reached the portal and ran through

Looking back to see if she was followed

She saw the flame haired giant with eyes of sapphire

Brilliantly blue in the mist staring into her heart

He seemed to be a part of her in some strange way

Lovers from another day?

Owl at the Standing Stones

She felt bright and carefree

As she wandered over the hills

Touching the towering oak trees

Her hand grazing over the hawthorn

The fragrance of the flowers

Blended into a beautiful perfumed bouquet

Of Jonquil, Daffodil and Larkspur

All mixed just for her

She had brought a sandwich with her

To keep her away from the house

It would be time enough to return

When she crept in like a wary field mouse

She was curious when the trees began to thin

This was a trail followed on a sudden whim

Ahead she saw something glittering blue

Sunlight dancing on still water

Hot from her walk she sped quickly forwards

Slipping her feet free from her shoes

Squealing from the unexpected cold

As her toes dipped beneath the surface

Pillowing her head on her hands

She gazed happily at the cotton puff clouds

Dozing for a short while

To the sound of the bees hovering nearby

Around her she heard the snuffle of the doe

As she wandered down to the pool

Happily she gazed at her beauty

As she lay there, time forgotten

The sun had moved far from mid-heaven

When she finally roused herself

Time to make the long journey back

The animal trail she had followed to the pool

Seemed different from the one she now trod

Trees thinning once more to an open expanse

Showed a circles of towering stones

She knew nothing of this circle

No idea any were near

Yet they seemed to draw her feet onward

Like a magnet is pulled towards true north

But what was calling her forth?

#Escape through the portal

Image courtesy of http://www.ephotozine.com                    Magic of the Standing Stones

Breathe purling in white wreaths from her mouth She moved deeper under the shelter of the ancient Oak tree A shimmering bent the air as A beautiful woman in a purple cape stood sheltered Within the arms of the old tree Deeper in shadow than before A prayer to Luna, moon Goddess, Shine your brilliance this night upon us all But yet hide your radiance from my luminescent skin The sounds of the spell caster following her trail Too close to chance the glow of her face calling him nearer One more leap to reach the Sacred Grove One more chance to journey through to their world again She sent forth her thoughts into the crystalline night There, high in this very tree, the wise and knowing gaze of the Owl A shimmering of her form saw her body become like mist

#Escape through the portal

Image courtesy of animals.timduru.org         She flew as the Owl, her guardian this night.

In its stead a large Snowy Owl Launching itself aloft it sped through the night The screech of the hunter on her trail Swooping down in to the midst of the Sacred Grove Encircled by Alder, Ash, Willow and Holly She landed lightly, shimmering once more into her human form From beneath the Willow strode forth a man, Gathering her close they breathed a silent prayer of thanks Turning they faced the silent stone circle Bowing their heads before the Gods They strode quickly to the portal A sound of pure hatred and rage Pierced the air with a scream As they stepped through the portal Blinding light flashed briefly As the furious raptor circled the grove Emptiness greeted his eyes as the light faded A flash of purple all that remained of her cape His prey had returned to their own time and place For this chase, his time was over.

#Between Worlds

~~~~~~~~~~
Bitter
Frost ridden wind
Caught deep inside her throat
Swirling
Like wraiths amongst the trees
Gnarled
Roots seemed to pull her feet
Gripping tightly to
Her satin slippers as she ran
A mournful howl
Echoing intense dread
Ripped across the silent moors
Glancing back
She could see a pair of blood red eyes
Peering hungrily in her direction
Heartbeat
Hammering in her veins
She pushed herself even faster
The trees themselves seemed to reach towards her
Welcoming in their evil embrace
The spell caster had wrought his magic well
Find
Bind
Kill
But never to let her go.
~~~~~~~~~

Ahead

The merest lightening of the sky

As the moon rose over the horizon

Time

Was running faster now

A consequence

Of the spell caster’s work

His Lord’s desire

Never to relinquish his claim

Over her body

But her heart

Belonged to the one who awaited her

On the far side of the portal

Between the standing stones

~~~~~~~~~
Finally free of the overhanging trees
Her dress blew free from her entangled legs
As she sped across the hillocky ground
Ahead the stones stood proud
Silhouetted in the growing brilliance of the moonlight
Suddenly
A blood curdling howl ripped apart the silence
Stumbling, she risked a glance behind
To see two evil red eyes
Their heat scalding on her back
~~~~~~~~~

Her trembling feet hit the smooth ground near the stones

The moon rose high in the sky

Just to her right the glistening light of the portal

Fetid breath almost overwhelmed her

An arm reached through the portal

Taking hold of her hand

Bringing her a new found strength

An eldritch howl pierced the night

She smiled at the sight which welcomed her

Through the swirling portal

Between the standing stones

Sighing

She stepped through.

The Portal of the Standing Stones

.

Silently

She slips from between warm sheets

Quietly

She tip toes towards the door

Noiselessly

She slips through the timber door

To small whispers

Of her dress as she hurries by

Mist

Trickles from her ruby lips

As the chill air envelops her form

Moonlight

Filters softly through the trees

As she hurriedly passes along

The narrow path

Made by countless feet

Towards the eerie moors

Shadows

Mockingly shiver and shake

As she rushes by

Wreathed with mist

They appear grotesquely misshapen

Their branches seeming

To reach for her slender form

Silver moonlight

Beckons her onwards

Through the twisted trees

Suddenly

The open expanse of moorland

Beckons her frantic footsteps

Glistening brightly on the dewy grass

Moonlight

Guiding her path

She trembles

Involuntary and

Incessant

As chill fingers wriggle along her spine

Ahead

The proud shadows of the Standing Stones

Behind

The waving branches of Spanish Moss covered trees

Forward and the future

Unknown to be sure

Backwards and despair

With a man unknown

Chosen as husband, but not by she

Soft pearlescent moonlight

Shines soothingly amidst the stones

Suddenly

A dark form moves

From beside the tallest stone

The form in ghostly moonlight

Becomes the figure of a man

Dark as night

His clothing hides

His presence from the unwary

Reaching his side they blend together

Two dark shapes become one

Strong arms enfold her slender red form

As they carefully walk widdershins

Round the Standing Stones

A Pause

A glance

Each looking deeply into the others eyes

A tender smile shared

A quick kiss

And hand in hand

They walk through the arch

Of the tallest Standing Stone

One moment of this world

The next

Together in another place

No-one knows

Safe together,

Loves sweet embrace

Protects them for all time.
