#TheOnlyChoice

It was close to dawn

The air frosty with a bite that went to the bone

She had on only a thin cotton dress

The only other had been left at home

Home, what was that but a place to sleep

Somewhere to eat and feel less than wanted

A house that was nothing more than a roof over her head

One she no longer wanted nor cared for.

She knew he would be looking for her soon

The man who was her fleshly husband

Searching quietly through each room

Anger would flare when he found her missing

This, her only chance to flee

Giving her a real choice to be

That which she really was

A noise behind her alerted her to dawn

The search for her had commenced

She could stay no longer

The dress, irrelevant in but a few more moments

The sun began its lukewarm climb over the horizon

Pale crimson and gold fingers pointed over the land

She stood tall and raised her hands to the sky

Towards the power of the winter sun

Taking a deep breath

She drew the energy of the sun into her heart

Shaking loose long auburn hair

Ready to take her part

In the distance she heard a forlorn howl

Her form writhed sinuously

Energy coalesced around her

Blurring the outlines of her human form

Once dissipated there stood a sleek wolf

Her hair a deep auburn colour

Lifting her head she howled joyously

The sound being joined by the other, closing swiftly

As they met, jumping with abandon around each other

They nuzzled each other happily

Shouts behind them from the house

Disturbed their welcome of each other

Bright sherry coloured eyes gazed knowingly

Together they loped off quickly through the forest

Her prison shattered for the last time.

#WolfSister

The Spirit of the Wolf

Wolf Sister

She lay there

Heart thumping painfully

Blood seeping slowly

Onto the white snow

Praying for strength

Just a little more strength

To see her to the stone circle

Through the portal

Finding safety once more

Her thoughts reached forth

Questing for her mate

The other half to her soul

The one to make her whole

A howl, hauntingly strong

Calling from the other side

Waiting for her to come

Soon….. Soon, she sent

Pulling herself to her feet once more

The proud she-wolf stood

Limping painfully onwards

Hiding from the man scent

She slipped from shadow to shadow

A trail, blood-red in her wake

A chorus of howls suddenly split the night

A curse heard deeper in the forest

The men hunting her paused

Looking fearfully for the wolf pack

She could smell the magic in the air

As she crept nearer to the stones

An unearthly humming filled the night

To the chorus of howls

Lurching into the safety of the stone circle

She was met by her mate

Nuzzled by her friends

One by one

As the air shimmered brightly

Their wolf form disappeared

Two women and three men stood before her

Waiting….

She held her head low

Gathering her strength for the change

The air shimmered in purple hues

Standing in the she wolf’s place

A beautiful woman now stood

One by one

Holding their partner’s hand

They stepped through the portal

Another night

Another adventure

A close call

Safely home again

Inside each, the memory

Deep in their cells

Their other half,

Wolf Brother and Wolf Sister

Waiting for the time to run again.

Blessings, Susan ♥

#Dusk til Dawn

image from onajourneybacktoherwings.blogspot.com

~

The sun’s golden orb slipped slowly from the sky

Down behind the far mountains

Shrouded in mist

Changing colour from white to yellow

Vibrant orange appeared like a painters brush

Swept across the skies

Only to change to a vermillion swirl

Deepening to violet

As the sun finally slipped behind the mountain

Leaving a glowing coronet around its head

~

Sky chasing the sun

Hues blending together to form a deep dreamless dark

So dark it appears black and not blue

Such a wonderful calming hue

Yet on the far horizon a change is seen

A mellow gleam rises it seems from the ocean

Rising majestically

Its white gold hue with shades of gold

That appears there too

Marking the march of time

Until the hour finally arrives

#Dusk til Dawn

She slips quietly from her bed

Clothes hidden beneath the stairs

Gathered quickly she changes

Moving silently out the door

The evening rain had swollen the frame

And it squeals in protests at its stealthy close

She stops silently waiting as her heart beats loudly

But silence reigns inside the manse

Slippered feet are soon drenched

Yet her feet flee lightly over the grass

Heading for the welcoming shadow of the trees

Once deeply shaded a large black wolf

Materialises at her side

Smiling she places her hand caressingly on his head

A shimmer ripples around him

Standing there is a tall man, dark of hair

Gazing deeply into each other eyes

They embrace

A timeless love reconnected in forever

~

As they break apart their fingertips barely touching

A shimmering warps the air around them

Standing in their place

The large black wolf and an ethereal white she wolf

Loping off together they join their pack

Racing silently through the night

At rest they lie side by side

His head on her shoulder

Her head resting lovingly on his

As dawn draws near they retrace their path

In deep shadow they wait for the last few moments

Moving slightly apart a simmering warps the air

Standing next to the large black wolf

The ethereal lady in white

Softly caressing his head

She turns and runs quickly back

Tears stream down her face as she reaches the house

As she gazes longing back to the woods

The sun just making its appearance in the heavens

She sees two golden eyes gleaming

As a mournful howl splits the air

Until the morrow whilst the full moon shines

She can visit her true love

And yearn for the turning of the moon

Til she is free to be with him once more.

The Pact
#The Pact

Image from xose00100.deviantart.com

“We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be –the mythologized epitome of a savage ruthless killer – which is, in reality, no more than a reflected image of ourself.”
Farley Mowat, Never Cry Wolf : Amazing True Story of Life Among Arctic Wolves

Silence

Weighed heavily as she waited

Hanging like a wet cloak on her shoulders

Wind

Whipped through the tops of the trees

Bringing gusts lashing the grass below

Rolling lines flowed away from her

As the wind blew the grass towards the plain

Confetti like fluttering heralded the autumn leaves

Fluttering

In colourful swathes around her head

In the silence she could hear them coming

Talking softly to each other

No need to shout

When the mind can say so much more

A pause

As they picked up her scent

Her family, her once family

Questions flickered swiftly through her mind

Why was she here?

Two legs could not be seen with the pack

Heart breaking silently she pleaded with them

Lift the promise she made

Her time with the two legs could end now

The pack was safe its territory secure

No longer was the bargain required

That one of the pack should stay with the two legs

Become one of the two legs

So they could feel safe

Safe that the pack would no longer bring them down

When they ventured into the pack’s territory

Puzzled they asked her

Why should the pact be broken?

Her family could hunt and kill the deer

The two legs no longer hunted them for their pelts

The cubs could grow in safety

Run with the wind

Play with the salmon

Raise their cubs in time

Two legs could never be trusted

If she returned

Two legs would hunt them once again

Thoughts were becoming fainter now

As the pack moved further away

Wait!

She silently cried to the night

Let me return! Let  Me  Return……

Silence

Weighed heavily as she waited

Hanging like a wet cloak on her shoulders

A heavy shroud for her heavy heart.

#Betrayal

image from http://www.deviantart.com                          Howling for the soul sister to pass

Betrayal

The time drifted by slowly

There was nothing left

No way to measure the passage of time

Nothing but the slow drip, drip, drip

She let her head roll back

Resting lightly against the window frame

Outside she could see the moon

A blood moon, portent of bad tidings

The trees outside wailed their mournful sounds

And somewhere a wolf howled loudly

Joined quickly by the rest of the pack

Strange, but she had seen no wolves here

Not since she came so long ago

But it wasn’t that long surely

No, it only felt that way

But fitting somehow that they came now

Almost as if they could hear her coming

Drip, drip, drip -The only sound inside

The howling of the wolves outside

And an eerie feeling creeping over all

She was starting to feel cold

The mist curled from her open mouth

She should have brought a blanket

Made things much easier in the end

The cold climbed upwards

Through her arms and legs

Up from the cold floor, cold as the grave

Drip, drip, drip, the continuing sound

Fainter now the wolves were drawing nearer

Their howling more frenetic than ever

The moon climbed higher so she raised her head

Strange how heavy her head now felt

Drip, drip, drip, a cold wetness intruded on her reverie

The howling wolves must have been outside the window

Their howls so loud in her head now

As the icy cold reached her heart

She gave one slow sigh

The light dimming in her eyes

She could no longer see the moon

No longer hear the slowing drip, drip, drip

The only sound

The howling of the wolves

The dripping stopped,

The moon still rose

The wolves howled once more

A cry of pain and anguish

For a soul lost.

Alone in death

As she had been in life

Alone.

The moon is fat and full tonight

I hear my brothers and sisters call

Wolves know deep in their collective mind

That something just isn’t quite right

Am I free to run with them in rushing flight

Am I free to follow them into the night.

image from aftergadget.wordpress.com

The owls sit in their tree

Watching the place where I sit

They watch with silent intensity

Searching to see if I’m free

Am I free to fly through the moonlight

Far away into the pure cold night

Nature it seems surrounds me

They know how these things should be

They know when a heart has been broken

They know when it’s time to be free

How do I ease these raging torments

That rend me apart deep inside

Like fangs or beaks ripping flesh apart

Or a storms waves crashing fiercely against the shore

Only to rear back  and pound forward once more

The past it carries our memories

To ensure we remember mistakes

Til we no longer need reminding

What repeating them will from us take

We can try to forget if we’re foolish

We can try to deny the truth

But sooner or later our memories

Return like a forbidden moonlit spell

To remind us of what we can’t tell

Tears can no longer quench

The burning deep in my soul

No answers can ease the agony

Can no longer make a heart whole

image from ipad.wallpapersus.com

So what is the answer you ask yourself

To move forward into the light

To leave forever this darkest of nights

Lit strangely by this bright moonlight

And forge ahead with all my might

I have no answer inside me

I have no-one I can ask

Solitary I must walk in this misery

For who would I burden with this task

So that I may run howling with my friends once again

Or fly free over forbidden plains

Lost I shall remain

Until a miracle removes the stain

And I need stand no more in the rain

Hiding tears which show all my pain

Til once more I’m at peace, in the sunlight again.
